Wherever you turn, oceans of wildflowers sweep the alpine slopes. As for wildlife, you'll see elk, moose, dear, black and grizzly bear, mountain goat, whistling marmot. Plus you will experience the annual migration of bald eagles feasting on spawning salmon.

Recapturing the Romance of Joe Cosley

My name is Brian McClung, President of Glacier Park Books and Videos.com and author of several books on Glacier Park: Belly River's Famous Joe Cosley, Hooked for Good: The Passion for Fishing Belly River and Hiking Bear Country. I started writing about Joe Cosley when I was a kid growing up in Glacier National Park in Northwest Montana and Waterton Lakes National Park in Southwest Alberta, Canada. These International Peace Parks were the headwaters of my youth. Joe Cosley is still the most famous character in Glacer and Waterton Parks and it is a thrill to share our books and experiences with you, our readers.

What made Joe Cosley a romantic character? He was a Mountain Man, Trapper, National Park Ranger, WWI Soldier and War Hero, Indian Fighter, Renegade, Trapper, Photographer, Poacher, Guide, Poet, Fancy Skater, Writer, Tree Carver, Legend, and All Around Good Guy.

Joe Cosley was certainly a romantic who not only gave his girl friends flowers, he composed poetry and named mountain lakes for them. Joe bought a large diamond for his true love Elizabeth and when rejected, he buried it in a tree and carve his initials to mark the spot. To camouflage his treasure, Joe carved his name in many trees all over Glacier and Waterton National Park.

Joe loved flowers in general and roses in particular. He even painted roses on the brim of his National Park hat. As a talented artist he painted and did charcoal drawings that he gave to his friends and loved ones. He also painted murals on friends' living room walls.

Joe often wrote to his friends. Some were not just letters but a series of pictures or cartoons drawings with a story told in each frame. One Cosley letter pictured him with a broken toe and he showed how he broke it and then walked around with it bandaged. It was full of humor. Everybody who ever received a Cosley Letter would show all their friends and neighbors and everyone would get a laugh out of the story told.

Each year, Life Preservers Publishing celebrates the Romance of Joe Cosley, and thanks our readers with a Free Drawing. On February 3, 2017, we awarded a beautiful bouquet of Cosley Roses, Hiking Bear Country by Brian McClung, a gift set of Montana Wild Huckleberry treats and a one-year subscription to Trapper and Predator Caller Magazine. This year's winners is Jim Meyer, who lives in Carlyle, Illinois. He is enjoying our books: Belly River's Famous Joe Cosley and Hooked For Good because he is interested in learning how Mountain Men lived more than a century ago. A widower, he gave the roses to his daughter and two daughter-in-laws. Our Congratulations to Jim!

The Big Wake Up

The end of Black and grizzly bear hibernation depends on parallel, elevation and the real season. Glacier National Park is just south of the 49th parallel touching Alberta Canada so the winters are long.

On the other hand, we humans had to wake up early this year
because daylight savings time was earlier and so was Spring and Easter. Bears
don't follow human seasonable holidays and so bears wake up when they do. They
moved out of their dens in the spring.

Females with cubs are particularly dangerous when they venture from their dens with newborns. Keep a safe distance from all bears. Never approach bears under any circumstance.

A bear is habituated when it becomes accustomed to humans and developed areas.
When a bear comes into camp or is not afraid of people then the bear is habituated. Bear tolerance of humans in close proximity with little reactions
to shouting and noise is a major concern.

Hazing is shouting, throwing rocks at the bear, waving large sticks at the bear, using Bear bangers or air horns and doing whatever it takes to drive the bear away to a safe distance and eventually for it to leave the area. If the bear does not respond to loud noise, then you know you have a more serious problem. Always have bear spray in your holster.

Some mauling are fatal. There is no good reason to remain passive. When a bear has been conditioned to human food, all efforts must be used to re-educate the bear. This is time to use your bear spray.

My definition of a re-educated bear is one that sees you, turns tale, and leaves the area. Any bear pepper spay is better than no spray but I know the best bear spray is made in Kalispell by Counter Assault. It is the best insurance you can pack. Counter Assault Bear Spray is available at the retail Sporting Good Stores listed on our website.

The best book on bear safety is my Hiking Bear Country that gives you just what you need for any season where there is a potential for bears.

I also recommend Staying Safe in Bear Country DVD
and Living Safe in Bear Country DVD
.
You have heard of the rule to never get between a bear and her cubs. The only time you are not between a sow and her cubs is when both cubs are touching her. This is the best DVD on Bear behavior because it will help you prevent bear encounters and attacks.

Staying Safe in Bear Country and Living in Bear Country are on sale to save you money and your life!

America's Most Scenic Drive

© Brian McClung, www.GlacierParkBooksandVideos.com

Americans have always had a love affair with their cars. Here is the number one gorgeous drive that will inspire even hardcore homebodies into hitting the open road to the most scenic trip of their lifetime.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road in Montana’s Glacier Park is the most scenic highway in North America, including Alaska. Hands down and thumbs up, it is the best, but you will have to come and see it for yourself. This is your VIP invitation to visit Glacier National park.

A heritage for the future.
The construction of this historical highway across the Continental Divide from East to West and West to East started in 1921 and was not finished until 1932. This was a huge undertaking in that day, which included carving out three tunnels through solid rock. Considered an engineering feat it is a National Historic Landmark. The construction of the road forever changed the way visitors would experience Glacier National Park. Future visitors would drive over sections of the park that previously had taken a week on horseback to see.

Glacier’s most scenic road is often featured in the media. Many times travel editors have included Glacier in the top ten American scenic drives, but once you have experienced Glacier’s Going-to-the-Sun you will know that it is # 1.

Car commercial = 2 seconds of fame
June 2, 2006 Did you see the Lincoln Zephyr commercials driving on the east side of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Both the Sun Road and the Zephyr looked great.

The incredible scenery stirs the soul of everyone who drives this piece of Heaven on earth. Indians told Lewis and Clark they called these mountains the land of shining mountains because of all the gargantuan glaciers they could see from great distances on both sides of the Continental Divide. Going-to-the-Sun road is 50 miles of breathtaking scenery that never quits. There are frequent pullouts where you can stop and view in more detail. We used to call these Kodak moments. I guess today they would be digital digressions. Take home lots of pictures so your neighbors will believe your stories.

Each year this road is usually not opened up until the first week of June because it is snow packed with huge snowdrifts and icy conditions. The park snow removal teams sometimes suffer from avalanches that bury equipment or carry them down the mountain side. While the road is never opened until it is safe for the average driver, this wilderness highway is not for the faint of heart. There are places where you can touch the Rocky Mountains, but keep your arms inside your windows. Going to the Sun road is usually opened in the last part of June, However it would be wise to check on Glacier National Park's website.
