This year, go prepared for bear.
When hiking in summer with companions (never hike alone), we talk the whole
distance and we rarely see a bear. I define "rarely" as one bear in ten
trips. However, when we hike in after Labor Day we see lots of bears. I
define "lots" as 30+ bears in one trip. The bears have been there all along
but are more visible in September when bears accelerate gorging themselves.
As we never know when we will encounter a back-country bear, we need to go
prepared. The only bear spray I recommend is Counter Assault Bear Spray
Deterrent. It comes in two sizes (8.1 oz and the new 10.2 oz).
The size I now prefer is 10.2 ounce canister and the quick-draw
holster for either your belt or backpack strap. The 10.2 ounce blasts
for 9.2 seconds. The extra amount will be there for you if you need it
again on your way out. My Hiking Bear Country book shows you how to use this
bear spray. After Labor Day, I suggest that every person in your group packs CA
spray.

Read my book HIKING BEAR COUNTRY and learn how to read a bear,
avoid bear encounters and to diffuse dangerous situations.
Also click on our Free Newsletter tab for additional information about Black and Grizzly bears.

Canadian Border Crossings Hikers are allowed to enter
Canada (and re-enter the USA) with US EPA registered bear deterrents for their
own use / protection against bear attacks. The product must be return to the
US and cannot be sold or remain in Canada. Canada and the US have different
labeling requirements. In the US, capsaicin and other related capsaicinoids
(2%) are required on the label. In Canada, only Capsaicin (1%) is allowed on
the label. Counter Assault sells the same product in the US and Canada, the
two countries just have different labeling requirements.

Hiker in Alaska "We had no plans to purchase bear spray until we read Hiking Bear Country by Brian McClung. It truly saved our lives. This book told us how and when to use bear spray and it worked when a brown bear charged us. Knowledge is power and we know we would not have survived without the training we received from Hiking Bear Country. Now I tell everyone about this book and studying it to go primed for bear and stay alive." Howard Platt, who hiked Denali, Alaska for his first time.

"If you liked Belly River's Famous Joe Cosley
, you'll love its twin companion book: i>Hooked for Good, Hooked for Life: The Passion for Fishing Belly River. It not only contains the profound wisdom and humor and spiritual insights of Brian's father, it also tells the rest of the story of what happened to Joe Cosley. It includes the life of the Park Ranger who captured Joe Cosley. This book is more than a hike down memory lane - it is a journey through history." Paul Vang, of the Montana Standard Newspaper, Butte Montana.

The Midwest Book Review
Belly River's Famous Joe Cosley is the true-life autobiography of one of the first park rangers of Glacier Park - a man who engaged in illegal trapping and poaching on the sly. His questionable activities eventually got him arrested and taken to trial; yet he escaped the authorities and out-raced the rangers of Glacier Park to his cache of furs, a struggle that included crossing 30 miles of icy Ahern Pass in one night, by snowshoe. Black and white photographs illustrate this amazing story of an extraordinary (albeit greedy)man, along with new information on his family. A most enjoyable read cover to cover, highly recommended.

Reader from Montana
I worked in Belly River on trail crew in the summer of 1973, and never knew the history of Joe Cosley and Belly River. This is a great book and the author Brian McClung did a fantastic job of telling an amazing story. It is a book you can't put down once you start reading it. I can't wait to read "Hook for Good, another book on the Belly River in Glacier National Park. Sincerely,
Pat Maher
